Dear Module Three “Life in Christ” CI Participants,

In our introductory session to Part Three of the Catechism, I tried to emphasize that this part of the Catechism is about “becoming saints” by “participation in the Divine nature” and being united with the summum bonum (greatest good) rather than simply drinking beer or pursuing some other such created good, however good in may truly be.

We talked about the impossibility of doing this other than by grace, which grace is mediated to us by the sacraments as “instrumental causes” so that we might fulfill our vocation as “liturgists” (!): high priests of creation leading all of creation in the symphonic praise of God.  The moral life is not complete and it is impossible unless it is “Life IN CHRIST.”  We spoke of happiness—objectively and subjectively—and how “I want to be happy” drives the bus for EVERYTHING we do.

The movement toward “a good” and THE Good is what stirs human action:  to be united with “what I want” is what makes me happy.  Finally, we spoke of the hierarchy of “the Good” and of “beatitude” or “happiness” and of Beatitudes—the Face of Christ-- as giving us THE meaningful goal, the illumination of what it is to be truly human.  The moral life is “human action, saturated / animated from within, by GRACE.”

And then I read Bishop Robert Barron’s little column from about a week ago. It’s short. It’s good. It underscores everything we said. Here is the link:

Deacon Joe
